Night Entertainment In Beijing
A friend who studied in Beijing
in early 1980s reminisced that during that time, if a traveler who has not had
dinner by 6.30 pm, then he or she would have to go without food all night. The
reason was the city of Beijing
at that time was bereft of nightlife scene. In other words, save for some
overpriced hotel
restaurants, there are no options for late dining. Even public
transportation like buses and taxis stop plying the streets by 11pm.
However, some two decades later, Beijing
can be considered as having one of Asia's
most active live music scenes and is home to a host of bars, pubs and clubs
keeping night revelers entertained until the wee small hours of the morning.
Sanlitun Night Entertainment
Sanlitun bar district is the original red hot Beijing
nightlife attraction. On the north side of Sanlitun
Road
is a smorgasbord of live music bars playing cover version music and original
compositions.
Poachers is a pub that started the Sanlitun
partying in the 1990s and still packs them in for cheap beers and pole dancing
or you can visit Bar Blu, which is Beijing's first fish and chip shop with a
popular disco and roof terrace for romantic couples.
If you are
the more learned type, try the Bookworm. This club can be considered an
institution in Beijing
for its large collections of books and holds frequent talks from authors all
over the world. Bookworm has three distinct sections, a café bar, a restaurant
serving western food and a hangout sofa room with books for sale. There is
also a nice roof terrace. Bookworm's collection of more than 10,000 books
spreads throughout the building.

Beijing bars for foreign visitors
The Jazz Ya, a restaurant cum bar attract mainly Japanese
tourists and visitors but is also a popular hangout for visitors from
western countries. The Havana Café, which is located further down, on the
west side of the Worker's Stadium's north gate is the first Latin themed bar
in Beijing
and attracts mainly foreign tourists and visitors. Although its popular back
garden is now closed, the mojitos are still flowing and the salsa is just as
hot!
Black Jack Garden is often referred to
as the Tennessee of Northern China. This club offers perhaps the best
selection of Jack Daniels to sip while you are playing pool or listening to
its diverse selection of music. Black Jack Garden also features a local heavy
metal night with DJ Chinabuzz spinning some of the heaviest music in Beijing.
There are many more interesting pubs and clubs in Sanlitun. Go check them out
and give yourself some pleasant surprises. Now, when someone is to complain
that there is little nightlife entertainment in Beijing,
introduce them to Sanlitun! - Written on 4th Oct 2007
