Beijing Xidan Shopping District

Xi Dan is a very large shopping district in Beijing and half a million commute there daily either to work or to go shopping. It is just a ten minutes ride from The Forbidden City or Wang Fu Jing (a high end shopping district attracting more foreign tourists than locals). You can find almost anything in Xidan's half a dozen giant shopping malls. These malls are good old fashioned, Chinese style shopping malls. As you walk to the main street, you will be confronted with a line of clothing stores which have loud sales staff trying to attract passerby into their shops. These clothing stores usually carry mid-range Chinese and Hong Kong brands.

Beijing 77th Street Plaza

77th Street is not a street name. It is the biggest youth fashion retail chain from Singapore , helmed by a lady entrepreneur by the name of Elim Chew. 77th Street plonked in millions of dollars to refurbish the two level basement of the Xidan Cultural Center and turned it into a hip and cool shopping mall aimed at the youths. After all, the expertise of 77th Street is in the youth market.

77th Street is firmly entrenched in the Singapore fashion retail industry with its unique and wide range of street wear fashion and accessories. Today, the company is the trendsetter for hip street wear fashion in both Singapore and Beijing and has built a loyal following among the young and trendy aged between 12 and 35.

77th Plaza opened with great fanfare in 2004 with senior politicians and officials from Beijing and Singapore attending the opening ceremony. As you step into this underground mall, you will be hit by colorful flashing lights and upbeat music just like you are stepping into a pulsating dance club or disco.

All the shops in this mall are geared towards the young and that is why it is an explosion of colors, sights and sound in the mall. You will get to see groups of young people bursting into spontaneous hip hop break dancing or skating while shopping or just hanging around the many eateries like what young people usually do. There is also a skating rink in 77th Street Plaza. With its mantra of "get a life, love my life, its my choice", this12,000 sq m (130,000 sq ft) shopping mall delivers an amazing shopping experience. It is a fusion of lifestyle captured under one roof in 77th Street Plaza, Xidan, Beijing Cultural Plaza. - 77th Street Plaza Beijing was posted on Oct 2007
