Tourist information about Japan
Japan is
an island nation blessed with stunning landscape and a hardworking cohesive
population. Unfortunately, it is the only country to have suffered from
nuclear attacks at the end of World War Two in 1945.
|
Japan is located in northeastern Asia
between the northern Pacific Ocean and the Sea
of Japan. Japan
has a land mass of about 377,870 sq km or 145 896 sq miles which is just a
little smaller than California.
Japan is made
up of four major islands and about 4,000 over smaller islands.
The four major Japanese islands are Hokkaido
to the north, Honshu which is the main island, Shikoku
which is the smallest of the four and Kyushu to
the south.
There is only one official language spoken in Japan,
which is of course Japanese. However, to the delight of many tourists, many
Japanese are able to understand English or speak to a certain extent. This is
because the English language is the foreign language all Japanese must learn
as part of compulsory school education.
Japan has a population of over 125 million people and. most
Japanese live in densely populated urban areas such as Tokyo
which is the capital of Japan.
Tokyo has a population
of about 12 million people.
Tokyo is a city of stark contrast which made it a very interesting
and exciting city to visit. From the glitzy lights of Shibuya and Roppongi ,
where wonderful restaurants, theme bars and karaoke clubs to dazzle you repose
against the tranquil serenity of Buddhist temples and sleepy side streets,
where quaint antique shops and old cafes abound.
Food and drink in Japan
Many foreign tourists regards Japan
as a food paradise. You can find traditional smoky yakitori
stalls where customers sit at makeshift tables, drinking ice-cold beer as the
sun goes down on a hot summer's day, to high class restaurants, where kimono
clad waitresses serve the freshest sushi. The quality and the variety of food
in Japan is
so great that you can hardly find such diversity and quantity of food in
anywhere else in the world.
|
Traditionally, having lunch would have been from the homemade bento box,
however many restaurants are now reinforcing the trend to eat out at midday
by offering great lunch set meals. This may include sushi sets with miso soup
and green tea. Most Japanese having lunch are seated by the counter so that
they can watch the chef in action, as the sushi is freshly cut and served on a
bamboo leaf placed in front of them.
