The Kingdom of Thailand is a favorite tourist destination. Prathet Thai is the full country name in Thai language which literally means Land of the Free. The capital city of Thailand is Bangkok or Krung Thep as it is locally called when translated is the City of Angels.  

 

Thailand is located in the heart of Southeast Asia. With this strategic positioning, it is a natural gateway to the Asean countries as well as Southern China. Thailand geographical landscape is divided into four natural regions,  the mountainous forested northern region,  the vast rice fields of the country’s central plains, the semi-arid farm lands of the northeastern region and the beautiful tropical islands and long coastline of the southern peninsular.

The Kingdom of Thailand is made up of 76 provinces. These provinces are further divided into districts, sub-districts and villages. Bangkok, being the country's capital city is the centre of politics, commercial, industrial and cultural activities.

Thailand is a constitutional monarchy with His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the ninth king of the Chakri Dynasty on the throne. King Bhumibol, is highly revered by the Thai people and has reigned Thailand for more than half a century. This makes the king the longest reigning Thai monarch.  

 
Thailand has a rich diversity of cultures and traditions. Its tropical climate and famous hospitality, the country is a natural draw for tourists from all over the world.

Visit the mountainous north and marvel at the profusion of multi colored orchids, ethnic native handicrafts and be surprised by its winter temperatures (December and January) that enable the cultivation of temperate fruits such as peaches and strawberries.

The Southern peninsular is where Thailand’s world famous beaches and islands can be found. The popular Koh Samui and Phuket is in this region.

 

Thailand has a population of about 63 million people. Although most of them are ethnic Thais, there are communities of Chinese, Indians and other origins. Thai people are well known for their friendliness, hospitality and they always carry a pleasant smile.

 
The English language is widely understood, especially in Bangkok and tourists areas. English and some European Languages are spoken in most hotels, shops and restaurants in tourist locations. Even the road signs are bi-lingual which are in Thai and English.
